A Better Costume Is Still a Costume
OCTOBER 26, 2026
Improvement makes who you've been more polished and more convincing, but it never asks whether that's who you need to be. The better the costume gets, the harder it is to take off.
Pick the area of your life you've been improving the longest, and ask honestly whether it needs to be better or different.
This weekend, many of us grown adults will spend real money to become someone else for a night.
A pirate. A zombie. Somebody at the party will be a hot dog. There's always a hot do for some reason.
Then Sunday morning, the costume comes off. The face paint doesn't entirely, but the idea is there.
The rest of the year is trickier.
You've read the books. Plural. A few of them twice. You have a morning routine, an evening routine, and an app that tracks whether you did the routines. You're better at almost everything than you were five years ago.
And your life, your business, looks almost exactly the same.
That's what improvement does. It takes who you've been and makes that version better tailored, better rested, and more convincing. Every year the costume gets a little better.
It's still the same costume.
You can get really, really good at a life you don't want. Plenty of people have. Some of them have podcasts.
And the better the costume gets, the harder it is to take off. You've invested. It fits. People compliment it. Nobody walks away from a costume that's getting compliments.
So you keep improving it. A new habit. A new framework. A new accessory. It's the most respectable way to avoid changing, because it never questions what it's improving.
Better asks how to be a better version of who you've been. Different asks a scarier question: who are you without the costume?
That's the real Halloween question. It's scarier than any haunted house, because you don't know the answer. You've been wearing the costume so long you're not sure what's underneath.
Here's what I've found, starting on a mountain road in Morocco, and on every crossing since: what's underneath is usually better than the costume. It just can't show up while you're busy improving the costume.
If you want to find out somewhere the costume can't follow you, we're going back to Morocco June 9 to 17, 2027: Marrakech, the Atlas Mountains, and the Sahara. nomatterwhatadventures.com/adventures/morocco
Enjoy your costume this weekend.
Just remember to take it off…
Key idea:
Getting better at who you've been isn't the same as becoming someone different. A better costume is still a costume. Improvement makes who you've been more polished and more convincing, but it never asks whether that's who you need to be. The better the costume gets, the harder it is to take off.
Takeaway:
Pick the area of your life you've been improving the longest, and ask honestly whether it needs to be better or different.
Build your movement:
What costume have you gotten so good at wearing that you forgot you put it on?
